This mobile electric vehicle app allows users to plan road trips and eliminate range anxiety by preselecting stops.

Along with the app comes a rebrand of the American Motors Coporation (AMC) and a brand new design system.

BACKGROUND RESEARCH

American Motors Corporation

AMC was an independent automaker founded in 1954. They focused on producing small and affordable cars for the average American. It was most widely known for its eclectic design work by Dick Teague.

Although it experienced a fair amount of success, it was ultimately unable to compete with the Big Three, and was acquired by Chrysler in 1987.

Branding

I took a look at the evolution of the American Motors logo and decided that I wanted to give a nod to the original logo that was designed in 1954. I wanted to give it a modern upgrade while still keeping it recognizable to AMC's original customers.

Mobile App Design

The American Motors app has two major functions: browsing destinations and planning trips. The home screen is designed for organized browsing, where the user can view their planned trips, recommended destinations, and destinations they have saved for later. The internal screens guide users through planning a trip or editing stops on an existing one.

Design System

I used the branding guidelines and mobile app components as a starting point to begin developing my design system. My goal was to organize the UI elements in order to allow for efficiency and consistency while designing AMC's mobile electric vehicle experience.

Takeaway

One of my main takeaways from this project is that as a designer, you will sometimes have to work with subjects that you aren't particularly interested in, or don't know much about. It can be easy to lose motivation in these situations, but more often than not, you'll be able to find a way to create a solution that is fulfilling for you as the designer while satisfying the client.
